Vice president runs for president – October 2011
The bylaws of an organization state that “no member shall hold more than one office at a time.” The term of office is two years. If the president is elected in even-numbered years and the vice president in odd-numbered years, must the vice president resign in order to run for president?
Opinion: No. Clearly the member who is now vice president cannot hold two offices, but he may be a candidate for president without resigning his office as vice president. If he receives the requisite number of votes for election, he must resign at once from the office of vice president or decline to serve as president.
